JOURNALISM
The voice of LOVE youth.
|
In a kindergarden classroom, children ages 5 and 6 are practicing a drill to
protect them from dangerous intruders with weapons: ”When you hear the words
LOCKDOWN over the loud-speaker,” they are told, “run and hide under your coats
in the coatroom.” Under a pile of jiggling coats, the children giggle and hold
hands. They are too young to understand this isn’t a game.
Violence is transforming our children and the environments where they live and
learn. Today’s youth are bombarded by messages of fear and surrounded by
physical and verbal violence and self-destructive behaviors at home, at school,
on the playground, and in the media.
LOVE ending violence youth to youth
Leave Out Violence (LOVE) reaches into schools and communities, teaching young
people ages 11-18, how to make non-violent choices and empowering them to
discuss alternatives to violence with their peers. LOVE Youth are spreading the
word about the costs of youth violence and influencing the way their generation
views their potential to make a positive difference in society.
